New London facility launched by award-winning VFX team

Launched this week, Milk is a new London based, high-end visual effects facility founded by former 3D creatives, VFX supervisors and executives from the Mill’s Film and TV division. This BAFTA award-winning team, responsible for visual effects for the BBC’s Doctor Who and the recent Ice Age Giants, will specialise in innovative 3D effects and character animation for both TV and feature films.

Based in Fitzrovia in central London, Milk has the capacity for 100 artist seats. The facility will immediately begin work on the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who (BBC) and Sherlock: Series Three (Hartswood Films/BBC), as well as the new TV adaptation of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Cuba Pictures/BBC), a mini-series due to be broadcast on BBC One in 2014.

“The talented team that makes up Milk has a wealth of award-winning experience in creating film quality visual effects for TV and highly complex stand-alone sequences for feature films,” said Milk CEO Will Cohen. “Nine years of working together prior to Milk has allowed us to build an effective working methodology with the ability to achieve creative excellence. And the work all comes together with incredible team spirit and passion.”

As well as Cohen (CEO/Executive Producer), Milk’s founders and owners are Nick Drew (Milk Managing Director/Executive Producer), Jean-Claude Deguara (VFX Supervisor and Joint Head of 3D), Nico Hernandez (VFX Supervisor and Joint Head of 3D), Sara Bennett (VFX Supervisor and Head of 2D) and VFX Supervisor Murray Barber. All six founders of the business previously comprised the senior management and creative team of the Mill’s Film and TV division.

The founders collectively have an array of award-winning credits for creating high-end visual effects including BAFTA-winning work on Doctor Who and Merlin (BBC), as well as Oscar nominated work on Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal Studios). The Milk team’s TV credits also include Ice Age Giants (BBC), Skins Redux (Channel 4) and Sinbad (Sky). Feature film credits include Les Miserables (Universal Studios), Dredd 3D (DNA Films) and the upcoming 47 Ronin (Universal Studios), which was shot in native stereoscopic 3D.

Cohen added: “Milk aims to be the most sought after visual effects team in what we believe is blossoming into a thriving industry for high-end TV visual effects. Our new venture is timed to enable us to capitalise on the new tax breaks in the UK as we expect to see an influx of TV work, as well as continued feature film work, coming to London over the next few months and beyond.”
